Read full description of the books:

In theory, young Kelson Haldane should have been the most fortunate of men. He was the King of Gwynedd, heir to all the powers of the human Haldanes and, from his mother, the magical talents of the Deryni.

But the facts were otherwise. For over two hundred years, the Deryni had been feared by the common people and persecuted by the Church, which held that their powers were witchcraft from the Devil. Even Jehana, Kelson's Deryni mother, shared that belief and lived in fear and shame because of her talents.

In Meara, the former Archbishop Loris was striving with a rump council of bishops to reinstate the previous reign of terror against all Deryni. Above all, he sought the torture and death of Kelson and the king's friends. And allied with him, the Pretender Queen Caitrin was leading a rebellion, seeking to rip Meara from the control of Gwynedd and make it again an independent kingdom. Kelson found himself embroiled in the ugliness of both a civil and religious war.

Now he was leading his forces against the armies of Caitrin and Loris. But so far, they evaded him, falling back on hit-and-run tactics by small bands of men, mostly outlaws and renegades drafted into the Mearan armies -- evil men, bent on rapine and destruction more than on honest combat.

Back at the court in Rhemuth, Kelson's uncle Nigel was facing an assassination plot by his ancient Torenthi enemies, bent on assassination and the threat of another rebellion against the young king.

Then there was the mysterious and powerful Camberian Council, with one of its members already training a potentially subversive member of Kelson's own family...

In Gwynedd, being king and Deryni was no sinecure.
