A fun look into the days when my parents would have been in grade school and what kids learned (or thought they learned) back then. Linkletter says everything in this book came from student test papers, but either children in those days were taught more advanced subjects at an earlier age than today's kids or some of it was fabricated, because some of the gags are too 'perfect'. For example, a kid defines 'riff raft' as a raft that splits down the middle. So not only does the child not recognize that the word is actually 'riff raff', but has to know the meaning of 'rift', change it to 'riff', and equate it to what a rift in a raft would mean. When I learned vocabulary words in school, we got definitions right away from the teacher or used the classroom dictionary to look them up, so I'm not sure how the child would have arrived at this definition come test time. The substitution of similar sounding words appears in many of the gags in this book. Horses are kept in chorales, protons are what makes up meat, light travels through a prison to separate the colors, etc.
The history section of this book also shows that children learned about certain events that weren't even covered in my schooling. Of course, for these kids, World War II and Korea were recent or current events, and things like Vietnam, civil rights, and conflicts in the Middle East had yet to occur, so there was about 40 years less history for them to have to cover in the same year-long class,
Other things like saying an octopus is so named because it knows how to care for 8 baby octopuses makes complete sense coming from the mind of a child. I did enjoy the reasoning the children used to figure out concepts they didn't understand. All in all, good for some chuckles, but I've seen better in modern books like 'F in Exams' and on humor websites. One of the funniest things, which was unintentional, was that a certain term that today is slang for an erection back then meant a funny answer. Linkletter uses this word frequently in the book, talking about the fuss made when one pops up in the middle of science class or the like. I would imagine in today's world, it would be more embarrassing than funny if one happened during class.
