Certain Indian revolts destroyed the family and goods from the Rancher Juan Domingo Orosco, in response and revenge for the maltreat and abuse of the savages. Orosco converted and became a Missionary working among the oriental tribes. He was always accompanied by his son Carlos who became very fund of this young Indian Beauty, Cumand. She saved the young white man's life in several opportunities, finally she accepted to become the wife of the chief of the Jibaros Yahuarmaqui so they would spare his beloved Carlos's life. At the end of this masterpiece we find out that Cumand is the daughter of Juan Domingo Orosco and that she didn't die when his ranch was destroyed, thanks to the protection of Pona, wife of the chief of the Paloras, and she was raised in the jungle as part of the Indian tribes. Cumand dies sacrificed according to the customs of the tribe; Orosco reconciles with his enemy, the loss of his daughter end the life of purification he had in the last few years.

Heredero y admirador del romanticismo francés, en particular de Chateaubriand, se le atribuye el papel de fundador de la crítica literaria en su país. Miembro del Partido Conservador, fue senador, gobernador en dos ocasiones y ministro del Tribunal de Cuentas. Fundó la Academia ecuatoriana y fomentó la conciencia literaria criollista. Esta preocupación por la cultura criolla se refleja en su Ojeada histórico-crítica sobre la poesía ecuatoriana (1868) y en una carta que dirigió a Menéndez y Pelayo en 1883. Escribió la letra del himno nacional ecuatoriano, los versos de Melodías indígenas (1858) y la leyenda inca en verso La virgen del Sol (1861). Su obra más popular, Cumandá o un drama entre salvajes (1879), se inscribe en el género del melodrama y narra los amores frustrados de los hermanos indios Carlos y Cumandá, ignorantes de su parentesco.
